When you first think of “Melbourne” you usually think of alleyways decorated with graffiti, tiny hole-in-the-wall cafes where the Baristas are as hot as the coffee, the satisfying *ding* of the tram going past, and the sound of black boots clicking along on the pavement. There is only one suburb that is more ‘melbourne’ than ‘melbourne’, and that is Fitzroy.
Fitzroy is an inner-city suburb just above Melbourne’s CBD and it is our belief that this is where Melbourne’s true soul lies. You can walk from the city, or alternatively, take the 96, 86, or 11 trams from the city and get off at Gertrude Street. Once you step off the tram you will be opposite the Carlton Gardens and as you start to wander down Gertrude Street your inner Melbournian hipster will be born. Here the mood changes instantly as you leave behind the ‘hustle and bustle’ of the city centre and enter a quaint neighbourhood that still feels quintessentially Melbourne. Fitzroy has it all - great boutiques, amazing cafes and restaurants, killer street art, terrace homes that will make your eyes fall out, and it has the best vibe.
Here is our complete guide in Fitzroy
To Do
The best thing about Fitzroy is that it is the best place to just ‘be’. Wander the streets, take some photos, and breathe in the air. You will feel deliriously happy. Gertrude, Smith, and Brunswick streets have beautiful boutiques, OP shops, and clothing retailers for you to hit up, as well as plenty of indie art galleries and cabaret bars.
Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch
Archie’s All Day - This is an absolute must! Perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon coffee, and dinner! Whatever you order you will enjoy. Our favourite is the Ricotta Hotcakes for breaky, with a big dirty coffee to go with it. If you’re there for lunch, do yourself a favour and get a side of fries with your meal - you’re welcome!
De Clieu - This is just next door to Archie’s and it is the perfect alternative. Lots of yummy food and strong coffee. It has a great decor and a beautiful fireplace - perfect for the colder weather!
Dinner
Cutler & Co - Wonderful fine dining! Great food and great drinks. Grab your friends and have a meal here before taking on Fitzroy’s nightlife.
Bad Frankie - Tucked away in a little alley off Smith street, this cute little restaurant is perfect for a casual dinner. Yummy jaffles and the best Espresso Martinis!
If you walk along Gertrude Street, Brunswick Street, or Smith Street (and all the little streets in between!) you will be able to find a perfect little cafe or restaurant. These suggestions should definitely be on your list but there is nothing better than discovering something on your own!
Drink
Naked for Saturn - Without a doubt! You cannot come to Melbourne without having a drink here. Head up to the rooftop before the sun sets, order some nibbles and drinks, and drink the evening in! Side note: their Espresso Martini’s are to die for.
Fitzroy is known for its great bars and there are hundreds and hundreds along Brunswick street so after having a few at Saturn’s wander the street and find your next spot!
Shop
Brunswick Street has you covered! There are amazing boutiques just waiting for you. Just wander around and go into every store you can. The OP shops are great as well as the up-market boutiques. There are also massive warehouses that host designer clothing sales, so get amongst it!
Stay
Get an Airbnb and live like a local! You won’t regret it. There for some amazing Airbnb’s on offer. You’ll feel right at home and your inner Melbournian will thank you.
Getting There
Walk from the city up through the Carlton Gardens and you will reach Gertrude Street - your adventure begins!
Alternatively, trams 96, 86, or 11 will get there from the city.
